For the “Étienne” rug, my starting point was a magnificent Savonnerie carpet whose motif had been designed by Étienne de La Vallée-Poussin: a delicate interplay of ribbons and flowers. I chose to abstract it, retaining only the rhythm of the ribbons, resulting in a highly graphic outcome. This rug has a strong presence while being designed to allow the other pieces of furniture placed upon it to fully express themselves.
